Exterior-grade HPL board in India generally sits between roughly Rs 175 and Rs 400 per square foot depending on thickness, grade and finish — but the installed facade cost is typically two to three times the board rate once substructure, fixings and labour are included. Budgeting from the board price alone is the most common costing error on cladding projects.
What the Board Rate Covers
Published HPL rates are for the panel only. Market listings for exterior-grade compact HPL in India commonly start around Rs 175 per square foot for standard grades and run to Rs 220 and above for premium exterior films and higher specification.
Within that range, the variables are:
- Thickness — the largest single driver. Material volume roughly doubles from 6mm to 12mm.
- Grade — standard exterior versus FR versus anti-graffiti specification
- Surface film — basic UV coating versus a multi-layer weather-protection film
- Finish family — solid colours are typically cheapest, complex wood and stone decors cost more to produce
- Volume — project quantities attract tier pricing
At HPL Maker we quote board rate and specification separately from the installed system, because bundling the two is what makes competing quotes impossible to compare properly.
The Full Installed Cost
For planning purposes on a typical Indian project, the installed cost stack looks roughly like this:
- HPL panels: Rs 175 to Rs 400 per sq ft
- Substructure: Rs 60 to Rs 150 per sq ft, depending heavily on material — this is where galvanised and aluminium separate sharply from mild steel
- Fixings, profiles, sealants: Rs 25 to Rs 50 per sq ft
- Labour and installation: Rs 40 to Rs 100 per sq ft, varying by city and facade complexity
- Access and scaffolding: project-specific, significant on anything above two storeys
- Wastage allowance: 10 to 15 percent of material
A reasonable all-in planning figure for a project facade is Rs 320 to Rs 650 per square foot. These are planning ranges, not quotations — actual cost moves with city, height, access and facade geometry.
Where Project Budgets Go Wrong
Cutting the substructure to afford the panel
The most expensive mistake in the whole exercise. Specifying a premium board and then value-engineering the frame down to site-welded mild steel with red-oxide primer produces a facade that fails from behind. The panel outlives the thing holding it up.
If budget is tight, reduce the clad area or step down the board grade. Do not compromise the frame.
Over-specifying thickness
Many residential and low-rise commercial facades are quoted at 10mm or 12mm where 6mm or 8mm is structurally adequate for the panel size and framework spacing. That is a large cost difference for capacity the building will never use.
Forgetting wastage and spares
Ordering the exact calculated quantity guarantees a top-up order later, and a later batch may differ in shade. Include 10 to 15 percent wastage plus a small spares allowance in the original order.
Treating access as an afterthought
On multi-storey work, scaffolding and access equipment can rival the labour line. It belongs in the budget from the start, not as a variation.
How to Compare Quotes Properly
- Convert everything to per square foot. Sheet sizes vary; a cheaper sheet may simply be smaller.
- Confirm the grade in writing. Interior laminate quoted against exterior HPL will always look cheaper and will always fail outdoors.
- Check what the substructure line actually specifies. MS, GI and aluminium are not interchangeable, and a quote that does not say which is not comparable.
- Ask whether fire classification is included. FR grade costs more; a quote without it is not competing on the same product.
- Separate supply from installation. Bundled quotes hide where the margin and the compromise sit.
The Ten-Year View
On a project with a long holding period — institutional buildings, owner-occupied commercial, hotels — the comparison that matters is not capital cost against painted render, but total cost including repaint cycles, scaffolding on each cycle, and operational disruption during works.
For a client who will own the building for fifteen years, that framing usually changes the decision. For a developer selling on completion, it usually does not. Both are legitimate; make the argument to the right party.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of HPL cladding per square foot in India?
Board rates generally run from about Rs 175 to Rs 400 per square foot. Fully installed, plan for roughly Rs 320 to Rs 650 per square foot including substructure, fixings and labour.
Why do HPL quotes vary so widely?
Thickness, grade, surface film quality and whether fire classification is included. Also whether the quote covers board only or the installed system.
How much should I budget for substructure?
Typically Rs 60 to Rs 150 per square foot. The spread is driven by material — galvanised and aluminium cost more than mild steel and are worth it.
How much wastage should a project allow?
10 percent for simple rectangular elevations, 12 to 15 percent for complex geometry, plus a small spares allowance from the same batch.
